Artist's Statement
My artwork is strongly influenced by
my love of color combinations. I especially like using
broad swathes of color to define a shape. I have a
highly developed sense of composition and layout characterized
by balance and order. Although I have a limited exposure
to the works of Piet Mondrian, I somehow feel an affinity
to the line and rhythm of his art. This carries over
to my Web designs. Pages are neat, orderly and easy
to read. Navigation is logical and geared toward the
end-user.
Colors and shapes in a digital composition combine
to tell a story or evoke an emotional reaction, just
as they do in more traditional artforms. These elements,
coupled with typefonts, can be used to develop a Web
site that says, "clean & crisp," "high
energy," "comfortable" or "sophisticated." This
is where a knowledge of my client's business guides
the design process. I like to use a client's existing
logo and color scheme to build a site that immediately
identifies the business to on-line visitors. Layout,
background color and image selection all play important
roles in achieving the desired look and feel.
I often feel I was born a generation too soon. Trained
in art before anybody had ever heard of a desktop computer,
I was immediately entranced the first time I saw an
icon for a fire engine on a mapping program. I wanted
to be the one drawing those icons. I took advantage
of every opportunity I had for graphics training. Now,
I would rather be doing graphic design work than anything
else...even eating or sleeping.
