Statue on pedestal:
"I believe it is St. Joseph, because of the flowering staff in his
hand. St. Joseph is often depicted with this flowering staff. One
reason I've heard is that Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy
that 'a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse', which
gives Jesus the title...'Rod
of Jesse' or 'Flower of Jesse's stem.' As you know,
Jesse is the father of King David.
"Another reason I've heard is the legend that a number of suitors
who sought Mary's hand in marriage were told to bring their staffs
to meet her, and the man whose staff sprouted lilies would be allowed
to marry her. Joseph's staff flowered and so he was betrothed to
Mary. Then all the other suitors broke their staffs in anger. I saw
a lovely sculpture depicting this legend in St. Matthew's Cathedral
(the Cathedral for the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington) in Washington
DC."

Anna Sommerlock Lee was John's daughter. Her son, John Sommerloch
Lee, had a brother named Joseph Collinson Lee. Graves of Anna,
her son John and her husband are just outside the northeast
corner of the Sommerlock family plot. That's me in the picture, to
give you an idea of just how big the plot is. |
