July
1 - Tuesday
Breakfast at the hotel was wonderful -- and included in the room cost.
Eggs, sausages, breads, cereals, teas, coffee on each table, brunch
selections (luncheon meats, cheeses, tuna in 3-bean salad, just like
Erich's mama used to make - Mike asked me if I knew I had been making
a traditional Viennese dish).
Went to the Hofburg first. Walked (and walked and walked) through the
silver & porcelain. Wished I hadn't. The apartments were very nice
once we finally got to them, past Sisi's death mask, rail car and the
dress she was wearing when she was killed. Creepy.
Went to register Mike for his conference next...took forever to get
there (walking). We checked email and relaxed for a bit, then went
to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Had €2,50 bottles of water in
the museum cafe, then went to see some art. Rick Steves' trick of checking
the postcards to make sure you don't miss anything you want to see
worked, especially since I forgot my list. We were so tired
after the museum, we ate expensive meals at Cafe Mozart (al fresco)
just because it was closer to the tram than where we'd planned to eat.
Mike still wants to go to McDonald's at some point, just to see what
it's like. We didn't make it to Mozarthaus, but we can go tomorrow.
Oh - and we ate lunch at the Palace - Hofburg Stüberl, as recommended
by the guide book. Mike had Käse Kreiner (he said it tasted just
like Cheddarwurst - I told him, "I'll bet you didn't know you
were eating traditional Viennese food all this time!") I had the
frankfurters (2 of them) with a Kaiser roll and Almdudler (lemon soda
- a product of the Coca Cola Company).
