June
30 - Monday
Finally arrived at hotel around 11:30 a.m. -- and found out check-in
wasn't until 2 p.m. Ate lunch at the hotel cafe: suppe mit nudln,
stuffed cabbage, canned pears for dessert. Got into room at 1:45, showered
and went out. One of the hotel brochures said trams for tram tour were
re-routed. Turns out Tram 2 was canceled completely until July 4 for
the Euro 2008 FanZone de-construction.
Took Tram 1, went to Tourist
Info Center and found out that tram wasn't even doing the full
circle. Got to all but Sacher, Demel and Manz bookstore on the walking
tour. Ate supper at J. Meinl am Graben -- ham and cheese never tasted
so good.
Walked back to Tram 1, had some confusion over where to catch #44 (and
where to get off) but we figured it out - had a nice 4 to 5 block walk
back down to the hotel.
TRAM STORY: Our first time on Tram #44, I got up and asked a group
of college students, <<Bitte, wo ist Schottentor?>> As
I puzzled over the German answer, one student smiled and said, "It's
the next stop." I thanked him in English and German.
SUPPER STORY: There were 2 menus on the table at J. Meinl - one in
German, one in English. Mike took the English menu to read. He asked
the waitress, <<Bitte, was ist rocket salad?>> She
answered, <<Ist
rucola - Englische menu, Deutches menu>> pointing to the
two menus and handing him the German one. Apparently, Mike's German
is better than he thinks.
